A family history of passion for the food business dating more than 70 years
paves the path to the doors of George’s Family Restaurant. Being proud to
serve fresh food started with George’s father, as the elder was a butcher
by trade. The seed of hope for a brighter future for his own young
family brought George Mitropoulos to the United States in early 1970.
With a single suitcase of clothing and a work ethic than could not be
contained, George and his wife, Angie, joined George’s brothers in
Florence, SC, and opened the Henny Penny Restaurant in 1974.
After seven years of working with others in the kitchen, George seized the
opportunity to branch out into his own business when the G & G Restaurant in
Timmonsville became available for sale in 1981. Over the three decades
that George and Angie have owned and operated George’s Family Restaurant,
they have remodeled a number of times, adding a drive-thru window and
increasing the original seating capacity from 25 to nearly 100. Yet, it is
not only the restaurant itself that has changed. Even thirty years later,
George and Angie are continuously refreshing the menu in order to serve
customers' palates more uniquely, whether a customer has special dietary
needs for a heart-healthy salad or if someone craves a decadent Philly-style
steak sub and fries.
In the essence of the expression "Family Restaurant," George's holds the
meaning in more than one way. All three of George and Angie's children have
had a hand in helping George's Restaurant welcome the families of the Pee Dee
area. The staff at George's are also like family. Most importantly, the
customers are truly more than just customers. Over the years, George and
Angie have made birthday meals for multiple generations of families,
catered weddings for couples that first ate at George's while in grade school,
and created special "care packages" for traveling customers as far as California.
This more personal attention is what makes George's a restaurant where diners
return time and again for authentic homemade food.
